A letter, 1837 May 4, to Mrs. Beecroft, discusses the death of a daughter-in-law, severity of the past winter, politics, religion, the improvement in society due to the influence of women and the marriages and deaths of friends. She mentions Lord John Campbell, John Lowell, Elizabeth Carter, trouble in Spain, the Edinburgh Review, the Lowell Institute, Hannah More's "Life and letters," and Catherine Sinclair's "Modern accomplishments." A letter, 1826 March 23, to Felicia Dorothea Hemans, praises Hemans on her book of poetry, "Forest Sanctuary," sent by the author, and describes a poem she herself began working on fifty years ago. She also sends condolences on a death in the family, and mentions various people. A letter, 1829 February 27, from Grant to Andrews Norton, discusses a recent visit of Norton to Scotland, comments on the poet, Felicia Dorothea Hemans, and mentions "Notions of the Americans," "Life of Lord Collingwood," "Journal and Letters of Bishop Heber," and the criticism of Lockhart's "Life of Burns" in the Edinburgh Review by Thomas Carlyle. Also laments trials of old age, sends greetings to American friends. A letter of introduction to Thomas Carlyle is present. There are also two invitations; a note regarding hunting; and a letter, 1822 July 1, describing visits and various family matters. Families discussed include the Fletchers and the Booths.
